104-YEAR-OLD RESIDENT IN MISSISSIPPI VETERANS HOME SYSTEM PASSES AWAY
Over the weekend, Mr. Pernellus Turner, our oldest resident in the Mississippi Veterans Home System, passed away at the age of 104.
Mr. Turner served in WWII and was a part of the infamous "D-Day" invasion in Normandy. Mr. Turner shared his story with staff members of the Mississippi VA, recalling how he had to sleep on the beach of Normandy the night after the invasion, still hearing bomber planes overhead and praying that he would make it through the night.
He also shared fun stories with us, such as his time living in New York and seeing the legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson play for the Dodgers in person, as well as his love for fishing, his family, and his faith in God.
A few years back, Turner was honored by the Mississippi Legislature, receiving a proclamation from the House of Representatives highlighting his service (he was honorably discharged as a sergeant in April 1945).
And U.S. Congressman (MS-D4) Mike Ezell presented Turner with the service medals he earned but never received during his time in the military.
World War Two Victory Medal
European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Medal
Bronze Star
Rifle Marksmanship Medal
U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal
U.S. Army Victory Lapel (World War II)
Mr. Turner is a true hero, and his legacy will live on forever through his family, friends and those who were blessed to care for him in our Veterans Home.
We extend our condolences to all who loved, respected and were inspired by Mr. Turner.

NEW MEMORIAL CEMETERY BENEFITS FOR MISSISSIPPI VETERANS
Burial Equity Act - Does It Impact You?
As of July 1, 2024, state law allows certain National Guardsmen and Reservists to be buried at our Newton and Kilmichael locations. Under this law, all costs related to a burial (approximately $950 per Veteran, spouse and/or dependent, plus an additional $115 for niche cover costs) at our cemeteries (casket or cremated) must be paid directly to our cemetery via cashier check or money order. Cemetery/memorial services can only be rendered once all funds are received.

National Cemetery Administration Adds Options for Commemorative Plaques and Urns
Families of deceased and cremated Veterans can apply to receive commemorative plaques or urns from the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs if they do not want to inter their loved ones in a VA National Cemetery or receive a government-furnished headstone, marker, or medallion for placement in any cemetery.
Commemorative urns hold the remains of a deceased cremated Veteran, and commemorative plaques are designed to hang on a wall. The urns and the plaques honor a Veteran's service and serve as a lasting tribute to the individual's status as a Veteran. Eligible family members can request one or the other, but not both.
